Working With Youth Who Believe They Can.

Marking The Impact Of Your Investments

Kevin Hicks

Executive Director

Just like the rest of the world we were thrown into chaos at the start of spring 2020.

Any planned youth activity was falling down like dominos:

  • Spoke'n Revolutions Spring Excursions
  • Bikes & Barnyards summer camp
  • Spoke'n Revolutions Summer Experience
  • TYMBR Wolves Mountain Biking

But we work with youth who believe they can and I'm reminded that there is a symbol for crisis, or chaos in the Chinese language. And it is the same symbol used for opportunity. We took this opportunity to introduce online book studies for the youth and for the community a Virtual Tour - a study of the lessons youth will be able to learn during a physical tour.

At the same time Triangle Bikeworks was finding ways to cope organizationally we were also witnessing our youth begin to suffer socially and emotionally under the weight of confinement. To answer their needs we started one-on-one rides until we were comfortable enough with safety protocols to ride as a group.

During this time your support sustained us while we worked toward a new normal.

An Experiential Educational Journey

Since 2011 you've provided scholarships for youth to continue learning throughout summer and experience history, much of it untold, exactly where it was made.

We Welcomed 2021

We opened 2021 with a trail cleanup service project on a section of the East Coast Greenway to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Day. We welcomed new members into the family with our Spring Excursions program and joined forces with community members in our Justice Journey ride for Black and Asian lives.

Why We Do It

Triangle Bikeworks started in 2010 as Spoke'n Revolutions in an effort to provide an activity for youth outside of traditional sports.

That idea to ride quickly became a method of providing experiential learning of culturally relevant history, discovery of inner strength, and confidence building for youth of color with the first tour of the Underground Railroad in 2011.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to strengthen the power of youth who are Black, Latine, Asian, Indigenous, and People Of Color to overcome challenges, achieve audacious goals, and discover their true selves.

Our Approach

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is an integral part of education and human development.

We incorporate a bike-centric framework around SEL that teaches youth to understand and respond to their own emotions, and to those of the people around them, into their education and experiences.

Bike

TBW youth demonstrate safe bike handling skills and set goals to increase their physical fitness by increasing mileage traveled by bike.

Learn

TBW youth experience BIPOC culture and history through travel, study, and participation in cultural events.

Lead

TBW youth lead group rides demonstrating knowledge of safe group riding and confidence in leadership abilities.

By The End Of Spring

We performed another trail cleanup to complete the Spring Excursions program and several youth participated in the Arts + Cycles Social Emotional Learning (SEL) work with our partner, Momentum Bike Clubs, at Clemson University. The participating youth accepted the invitation to South Carolina and participated in their Juneteenth ride.

Unfortunately, we were no more confident than before to hold our Bikes & Barnyards summer camp and it was cancelled.

Triangle Bikeworks In Action

Our model is about empowering youth and providing challenges through biking related activities; allowing them to understand themselves better - on these things we’ll never compromise on.

A Belief That They Can

With persistence and agility the youth were able to have a Summer Experience tour. Building on their belief that they can, 750+ miles and several cultural sites were explored. For each goal the youth set - whether it was fundraising (identifying formal and informal resources in the community), getting to the next rest break, or completing every mile of the tour; they were able to accomplish it for themselves. It all becomes a part of their SEL work.

From Carrboro, NC To St. Augustine, FL

Fourteen youth of 75 invited chose to challenge themselves on an arduous 777 mile journey of self discovery and Untold History.

Moving Into Fall

When the Triangle Bikeworks youth finished touring they led our August Let's Ride! community event in the Northside neighborhood of Chapel Hill, led the annual Tarwheel Fun Ride historical tour of Hillsborough, and led the Thanks + Giving pre-event ride in November. They officially wrapped up this year of cycling and weeks of training with the Fall Excursions ride from our offices in Carrboro to Greensboro, NC. Taking in the history of NC A&T and its involvement in the nation changing event of the Woolworth sit-ins as outlined by the International Civil Rights Museum.

Our Vision For

2022 and Beyond

Our dream is to reach more youth in the Triangle area and prepare our grass-roots, local nonprofit to become a national model for youth education and empowerment.

Building social, physical, emotional, and academic (SEL) strength in youth everywhere.

To make our vision a reality we will work hard in the following areas:

Orange County

reach deeper into Orange County to offer experiential learning opportunities and personal achievement.

Durham County

expand outreach to DURHAM County youth for experiential learning opportunities and personal achievement.

Mountain Biking

INCREASE PARTICIPATION FOR YOUTH OF COLOR IN MOUNTAIN BIKING TO ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF THE SPORT

What Our Alumni Have To Say

“Setting goals and not letting the obstacles that are keeping you from getting those goals get in the way.

Just to keep on persevering.”

Chris Dargan, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2011

"As a rider, we always push ourselves to not stop pedaling when you're going up a hill and I wanted to quit but I didn’t, I made it to the top. It seemed like it would never end..."

Mahlique Keith, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2011-2012

"It’s spiritual, mental, physical, all of those. A really great experience. It’s not like any other. It’s not just biking."

Abeo Hicks, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2016-2019

"It just instilled in me this belief that there’s so much more we can do if we just really put in the effort."

Cindy Chen, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2018

"It’s a great experience for self improvement and just enjoying something new."

Eh Wei, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2018-2019

"No matter who you are, there’s something for you in this program, whether you realize it or not, in every way of growth. I learned lessons in patience, in self worth, in growth, in strength, in pride. All of those lessons can be translated into things way down in your life… you can’t go wrong with the program."

Maysa Guthrie, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2012

"It’s amazing to see how close everyone gets at the end of the trip."

Fernando Sanchez, Spoke'n Revolutions Cyclists 2013-2015
